A wonderful story showing us that we don't always know the truth of what we think we know. Holly never understood why her mother wouldn't tell her about her father. She didn't know anything about her mother's past. Learning, after her mother's death, that her father was a homeless alcoholic and that her mother had grown up Amish had shocked her.Learning about the Amish on the computer and then her boss giving her an assignment about Amish Christmas traditions, gave her the chance to go to the community where her mother had come from.
God put Evan and Becca in Holly' s life, not only to help her find her relatives, but to put her heart close to them ant to God. Imagine thinking you are all alone and then to find you have a huge extended family!
This is a lovely story about turning to God, finding faith again, love, family, and being happy to turn her life over to God, and the Amish lifestyle.
A very good read and quickly read.

The Amish Orphan Christmas Amish Romance Hannah Schrock 9781520113494 Books Reviews
I really enjoy stories about the Amish life. Life is so fast paced and packed with things that must be done. I sometimes wish for a slower pace. Believe me, I don't want to give up electricity. I just would like to have more time to enjoy life. To have more time for God, family and friends. The book needs a little bit of editing........
This story, by Hannah Schrock, was a first for me for I have never experienced this author's writing style before. I must say that I originally was going to give this novel a three- due to some grammar and 'filler' errors; however, the story-line was different then 'typical' Amish novels and very well developed so I decided on a four.
"The Amish Orphan's Christmas (Amish Romance)" is a tale about a grown woman becoming an "Amish Orphan" as her life intermingles with the lives of a young man who takes in his niece who also has became an "Amish Orphan." Holly Saunders is not the A-typical Englisher, for she knew of her mother's roots without actually knowing anything about them. As she embarks on a new adventure to find out about her mother's heritage she just might find a piece to feel the spot that has been empty in her life.
Holly Sanders writes for a newspaper. Her Father was a drunk & abusive to her Mother. Her Mother divorced him not long after she was born.
She was 19 years old and found through research in Philadelphia her Father died 10 days before she arrived. She argued why her Mother hadn't told her his name sooner.
A few years later her Editor came to her office that her Mother died of a heart attack. He knew she was Amish and left to marry her father.
Now the editor assigns her to find out more about Amish customs & write an article for the paper.
Her Mother's maiden name was Bontrager, born in New Wilmington, PA.
She goes there to see if any of her family is still there. She has a small picture when her mother was younger, but not dressed as an Amish woman.
This book has so much more to it you need to read it. Will she find her Amish family & more? Enjoy.
This was a good book. I felt every desperate tear at my heart at the "so close and yet so far" moments in the story. I could not help but cry. The tries to connect the difficult moments made me feel so helpless and it was so heartbreaking. This was a great book that got me to feel that it was not going to come together and it is frustrating. When it finally did it was exhausting. I laid back and just listened to my breathing. It was a REAL experience.
Cute and heartwarming story, but the editing of this book is terrible. Too many misspellings to count. The writer also uses the term Ordnung to describe other Amish communities in this book. I thought the Ordnung is a set of rules for Amish, Old Order Mennonite and Conservative Mennonite living. Ordnung is the German word for order, discipline, rule, arrangement, organization, or system. I found the use of this term to describe a community, or district, inappropriate.
As an aside, I find that Amish romance writers tend to "sprinkle" Pennsylvania Dutch words into the story, sometimes where it isn't necessary. It becomes tiresome after a while and it's excessive in this book.
I was enjoying reading this book when suddenly I am at the epilogue. There is a rush of events to the happy ending but it just seemed like the writer got in a rush to end the book. It's a shame too because she is a good writer. I would have loved to curl up on the couch and settle into this book but as it is I barely sat down before it was over.
Holly Sanders grew up not knowing anything about her father. Her mother, exiled from the Amish community, refused to say much about her past.
But now Holly's mother is gone - and Holly, 22, is determined to learn the truth about her parents. She travels to the town where her mother grew up, meeting Evan Miller along the way. The young Amish man is raising his 5-year-old niece Becca, who hasn't spoken since the fire that killed her parents.
Right away, Holly feels a special bond with both Evan and Becca. But what happens when it's time to return to Philadelphia?
While the general story makes for a quick, enjoyable read, the underlying fact is that it's not terribly believable. Holly, taking a few night courses at a local college, is already working a full-time job as a newspaper reporter. (As a former reporter myself, I know that just about every journalism job in today's world requires a college degree and experience, regardless of how "low-level" it may be, simply because there are so many people competing for so few jobs.) Then, there's the aspect of Holly managing to make a huge connection with Becca, a severely traumatized child, within a matter of days. Is it possible? Certainly. Is it likely? No.
Still, the characters are likable, set in a tiny, personable community. If you're looking for a quick holiday read and don't need to analyze the details too much, this one's for you.
A wonderful story showing us that we don't always know the truth of what we think we know. Holly never understood why her mother wouldn't tell her about her father. She didn't know anything about her mother's past. Learning, after her mother's death, that her father was a homeless alcoholic and that her mother had grown up Amish had shocked her.
Learning about the Amish on the computer and then her boss giving her an assignment about Amish Christmas traditions, gave her the chance to go to the community where her mother had come from.
